Lent Madness: If you're looking for an educational and fun activity this Lent, consider filling out a bracket for Lent Madness! This online program, at www.lentmadness.org, encourages us to learn about the lives of the amazing holy saints that have come before us, while also not taking ourselves too seriously. The format is straightforward: 32 saints are placed into a tournament-like single elimination bracket. Each pairing remains open for a set period of time and people vote for their favorite saint. 16 saints make it to the Round of the Saintly Sixteen; eight advance to the Round of the Elate Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Championship; and the winner is awarded the coveted Golden Halo on Holy Wednesday. The first round consists of basic biographical information about each of the 32 saints. Things get a bit more interesting in the subsequent rounds as we offer quotes and quirks, explore legends, and even move into the area of saintly kitsch. You can fill out your bracket either online or on paper, and vote for your picks to win each day of the tournament. If you're interested in joining a St. Mark's online group to compare brackets, share what we've learned, and bemoan a busted bracket, contact Anali Perry at [email protected] - or catch her in person at the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, where she will have printed brackets and a tournament calendar to help you get started! Lent Madness kicks off on Thursday, Feb 15, with a match up between Thomas Cranmer and Thomas the Apostle. Who will advance to the Saintly Sixteen?
